Interesting article here
What is a Singaporean?
It's my personal feeling that as citizens and PRs spend two years of their life (and many other months after that) serving in our nation's army, there should be some other paybacks for us.
It would be nice if after we come out, we would be able to get a job, start a family. blah blah.
Why do we need to that many FTs? Isn't our education system one of the best in the world? Aren't we capable enough to produce enough talent to provide a constant supply of top talent (to be CEOs and all), above-average talent (to be managers) etc.
Maybe it might be better for us to offer bonded scholarships to scholars, to make them maybe work 2 years in Singapore or something. It would serve 2 purposes. Firstly, the money we invest into them would have a return. If the government wants more FTs to serve in our economic growth, than retaining them via contract would be better than spending the money, only to let them go overseas to study and never come back.
Singapore's economic boom, although largely attributed to FDIs, has been made by employing locals to run the businesses, and this has been largely successful. Why the need to displace us in favour of the FTs, i don't quite understand.
With a population of 6.5 million (as projected by the gov't), plus the prediction of 52% of people above 55 living to around 85 (thanks mr chew for the correction), it might lead to an acute aging crisis. Plus, we might become more and more like HK, overcrowded, and a widening income inequality. I think the 4.8 million is enough, and the govt should realise that economic growth is not the alpha and omega for Singapore...
